Newlyweds: Jourdan and Jacob Schar

May 11, 2026

Jourdan (25) and Jacob (24) met at Academic Magnet High School. They’re both in medical school now, on track to earn their MDs in 2028 – Jourdan at MUSC in Charleston, Jacob at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Jourdan was born and raised in Charleston. Jacob grew up in an Air Force family and lived in five states and England, but considers Charleston home. Together since February 2018, they got married on 4/25/26 at Harborside East.

Current location:

Charleston, SC.

How did you meet?

We met at Academic Magnet High School and started dating when Jacob was a sophomore and I was a junior. I played soccer and Jacob played basketball, so we met through mutual friends.

What did you do on your first date?

We went to Moe’s after one of Jacob’s basketball practices and it was a school night so I drove Jacob home after (I know pretty boring 🙂).

Tell us about the proposal.

We got engaged in White Point Garden in Downtown Charleston. I didn’t know Jacob was in town and my friends and I were going to the Battery to take pictures. My friends then asked if I wanted to take some solo shots and when I said yes, Jacob walked in and surprised me. Our siblings were hiding in the bushes the whole time!

Why did you choose to get married in Charleston?

We chose to get married in Charleston because it’s where we met and it means a lot to us. We wanted to have the bridge in the background as it’s a symbol of Charleston, where we fell in love, and so we chose to get married at Harborside East. We were surrounded by our friends and family and it was the best day of our lives.

What was your first dance song?

So Close by Jon McLaughlin from Enchanted (one of our favorite movies).

Do you believe in love at first sight?

We 100% believe in love at first sight. Jacob asked me to be his girlfriend on our very first date. Years later I joked with him about how fast he asked me, but he didn’t laugh. He said “I knew from the moment I met you that I was going to marry you”. I told this exact story during our wedding vows. We believe that when you know, you know, so why wait?

What’s your definition of love?

Love is a small, but powerful word with a multifaceted definition. Simply put is a statement of adoration for someone or something; in a relationship it means that the person you are with means everything. Deeper, it is a commitment to that person. An unwritten, but known fact that you will be there for them at their lowest, and that they will be there for you at yours. A dedication to supporting and building one another up. Celebrating one another’s achievements, big or small. Making the most out of everyday together because they are your world.

What are your thoughts on dating nowadays?

I think it’s hard to give advice when we have been out of the dating world for so long, and that we started dating in high school, but we are romantics at heart. We believe that in a world full of distractions, deep down everyone wants to be loved and cared for.

What advice would you give people searching for their life partner?

Always know your worth and do not settle for less. Find someone who makes it hard to fall asleep because reality is better than your dreams.

On paper, would you say you’re a compatible couple?

We are the same exact person. We have the exact same interests. We love watching sports on TV – college football, hockey, college basketball. We love trying new restaurants. Our favorite thing to do is a late night sweet treat run. We couldn’t be more similar and we are each others best friend.

What’s the best piece of advice you received about marriage?

Never stop going on dates. Make the little things special.

What are your future plans?

First we want to graduate medical school. Jacob wants to go into Interventional Radiology and I want to go into Pediatric Emergency Medicine. After our residency and fellowship and once we settle down where we want to live long term (hopefully Charleston!), we then would love to have kids. Definitely some dogs along the way since that’s quite a while away from now!

Who’s the better cook?

I’m the better overall cook, but Jacob’s specialty is Philly cheesesteak and chicken parm. I love making steaks.

Who’s more organized?

I’m definitely more organized than Jacob. I’m constantly tidying and organizing – it’s what I love to do. Jacob is very cognizant of putting stuff back right where he found it 🙂

What are some of your favorite date spots around town?

A picnic at Pitt Street Bridge in Mount Pleasant, getting late night ice cream at Off Track in downtown and then walking around the streets while they’re quiet and empty. We also love The Obstinate Daughter and Pelato.
