Hundreds of drones to light up Charleston harbor
Charleston’s skies will light up with a high-tech tribute to the nation’s founding on June 27 from 4 to 9:15 p.m. at the U.S. Custom House, 200 E. Bay St. The evening features live music, historical storytelling, documentary screenings, colonial dance lessons, military demonstrations and reenactors, with performances by The Gullah Collective, Warrick McZeke and Candice Glover. Food vendors include Peculiar Pig, Golden Citrus and King of Pops. It culminates in a drone show over Charleston Harbor depicting images inspired by the 1776 Battle of Sullivan’s Island. Best viewing is along Waterfront Park and near The Cooper hotel.
New Charleston coffee shop
Point Break Coffee, a James Island shop, opened a second location at 49 Archdale St. downtown on June 22. The 290-square-foot spot offers smoothies, matcha, açaí bowls and gluten-free treats, with an espresso machine coming this fall. Owner Mary Ann Stisher opened the original on Folly Road in 2022. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday through Monday, closed Wednesdays.

Dive In Food and Spirits opens

Don Gato Tequila, the Charleston-based brand co-founded by actor Danny McBride, won five medals at the Agavos Awards for additive-free tequilas: gold for its Blanco and four silvers for its Reposado, packaging, social media and label design. McBride, a Sullivan’s Island resident, started the company in 2024 with his wife Gia and local restaurateurs. It’s sold at local area bars and online.
The Lowline Hotel opens next month
The former Hyatt Place at 560 King St. reopens July 15 as The Lowline Hotel, a 197-room JdV by Hyatt property. The renovated hotel features Leeward Restaurant and Patio, The Long Game golf simulator lounge, the rooftop Pour Taproom with 70-plus craft beers, and Spirited Coffee & Provisions café. Amenities include an indoor pool, fitness center, and 8,000 square feet of event space. The name references the adjacent Lowcountry Lowline trail.
167 Sushi Bar is moving
The sushi spot, from the owners of seafood restaurant 167 Raw, will relocate to a bigger space at 5 Cumberland St., which was previously home to Irish bar Bumpa’s. The move is expected in the next six months.
New on the menu
Lewis Barbecue is now serving smoked oxtail with Marsh Hen Mill green chile grits and a Hatch red chile reduction. The new dish is available every Monday.
Two Blokes Brewing is expanding to Charleston
The Mount Pleasant brewery announced on social media that it will open its second brewery on Cannon Street in downtown Charleston. The Mount Pleasant location is at 547 Long Point Road, Suite 101.
New wine bar opens in Charleston
Sonder Wine Bar + Retail Shop is now open at 90 Cannon St. in Charleston’s Cannonborough Elliottborough neighborhood. Owned by Michelle Kauczka and Jill Schenzel, it serves wine by the glass and bottle plus small plates. Hours: noon-8 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday; noon-10 p.m. Friday, Saturday. Happy hour 4-6 p.m.
New coffee & cocktail place opening in Charleston
Chef Michael Toscano, owner of Le Farfalle and Da Toscano Porchetta Shop, is opening The Larrikin later this year, an all-day eatery serving espresso and cold brew in the morning, grain bowls and salads midday, and cocktails at night. The 60-seat spot sources coffee from roasters across the Carolinas. It’s currently popping up at Blanca Estrada.
Steep Me Tea Apothecary opens on King Street
The shop, which serves hot and iced beverages infused from over 400 varieties of loose-leaf tea, is now open at 651 King St. The grand opening will be Saturday (May 23rd) from 8 AM to 4 PM.
Lou Lou’s Tavern on the Tracks sets opening date
The restaurant by Dave and Chrissy Lorenz of Epic Hospitality (Mex 1, Islander 71), opens May 21 at The Refinery (1640 Meeting Street Road) in the former Cleats space. To start, the place will serve 20-30 small plates plus four entrees. Hours: 4-10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, with brunch and lunch added later.
Sewing Down South reopens
The King Street home goods store co-owned by "Southern Charm" cast member Craig Conover, reopened yesterday after several days of renovations marking its flagship's five-year anniversary. The new layout features a pillow wall, apparel section, photo backdrop, and a rotating local maker spotlight starting with Trista Kutcher. Conover co-founded the brand in 2018.
Nigel closes last Charleston location
Nigel’s Good Food closed its final location in Hanahan’s Bowen Village in April, concluding a 15-year run. Owner Nigel Drayton, who began his culinary career at Hyman’s Seafood, opened the original restaurant in 2011 following a catering business launched in 2005. At its peak, Nigel's included three locations and a barbecue outpost, all of which have now closed. Drayton continues to operate Nola’s Creole and Soul in Summerville, which opened in September 2024 and serves select signature items from the Nigel's Good Food menu.
Charleston ✈ Atlantic City
Breeze Airways is launching a new nonstop route connecting Charleston and Atlantic City, New Jersey, with service beginning May 6. The twice-weekly flights will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Rodney Scott’s BBQ has closed
The BBQ place closed its King Street location on May 3 "until further notice." According to a report, the closure follows an April 27 breach of contract lawsuit filed in Charleston County, alleging Rodney Scott's BBQ, RSBBQ Partners, Nick Pihakis and affiliated entities failed to repay a $350,000 loan from Itria Ventures.
Charleston Airshow has been cancelled due to weather ✈
The 2026 Charleston Airshow, scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, over the Charleston Harbor, has been canceled due to adverse weather conditions. "While the intent was to proceed with the show unless weather posed a serious safety risk, the current and forecasted conditions have unfortunately reached that critical safety threshold. As previously communicated, the show cannot be rescheduled," Joint Base Charleston said in a statement.
