Charleston County to increase parking fees in two downtown garages
The county-owned garages at 90 Cumberland Street and 85 Queen Street will have new rates of $1 per 20 minutes (a dollar more per hour). The daily maximum will increase from $20 to $24 and lost ticket fees will be $50 instead of $30.
Zaxby’s is coming to Mount Pleasant
According to Town Council Member Daniel Brownstein, the fried chicken chain is planning to open a location in Mount Pleasant. On August 27, the town's Design Review Board will examine preliminary plans for the new location at 3294 N. Highway 17 near Park West.
Cleats is closing

2026 Culinary Village
Charleston Wine + Food announced that the Culinary Village will return to The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium in 2026. Pre-sale Culinary Village GA tickets go on sale this Thursday, August 21 at 11 AM. GA tickets are $185 (+ fees) – this offer ends September 1, 2025. The festival, which runs from March 4-8, will feature bites from local and visiting chefs, craft beverages, and live music.
Shake Shack is coming to South Carolina
The burger chain will open its first location in the state in Tanger Outlets in North Charleston. The opening date is not yet available. [Post and Courier]
Crumbl has a Dubai chocolate brownie
Crumbl is now offering a brownie based on the viral Dubai chocolate. The brownie has a crunchy Kataifi and pistachio filling topped with a layer of milk chocolate and drizzled with pistachio cream. The brownie, which is available between Aug 18-23, can be found at the Mount Pleasant store. We gave it a try and it is a good brownie.

SC to remove 120-foot Navy vessel
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources will remove the derelict Navy torpedo retriever from Bohicket Creek, which has been stuck in the creek for over four years and leaking oil. SCDNR will remove the vessel on Aug. 19 alongside Stevens Towing, a Charleston-based marine transportation and salvage company, which was awarded a $235,000 contract to remove the vessel and tow it to a drydock.

Mount Pleasant's Spoon and Cake, located at 1956 Long Grove Dr near Target, has a new mini red velvet cake. The bakery, which had its soft opening in April, offers cakes, pastries, desserts, and breads.
Mount Pleasant won’t move forward with Towne Centre redevelopment plan
The Town of Mount Pleasant denied a redevelopment plan that would have added hundreds of housing, apartment and office units at Towne Centre. The council denied the project with a 7-1 vote. [WCBD].

The Mount Pleasant Police Department shared a video showing a lightning strike in Highway 17. The strike caused power outages and traffic delays, but no one was injured and Dominion Energy restored power and removed the downed wires.
Melvin’s BBQ to temporarily close
The Mount Pleasant location will be closed from Aug. 11-16 for some updates and renovations. The location in James Island remains open.
Sermet’s Courtyard is closing
The restaurant, which served the Daniel Island area since 2011, will close on August 20. A new spot by the owners of Nick's German Kitchen called Vinea Courtyard Kitchen, is set to open in the same location in September.
Gov. McMaster signs Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Bill into law
The new law prohibits holding or supporting mobile devices with any part of the body while operating a vehicle and goes into effect on September 1.
Timber Pizza Co. officially opens
The pizzeria, which started in 2014 and was named Pizzeria of the Year by Bon Appétit magazine in 2017, officially opened in downtown Charleston. The spot, which is located at 741 Meeting Street Suite 102, can seat 34 indoors and 16 outdoors.
